FSU’s MagLab launches ultra-high-sensitivity NMR facility with $18M NSF grant

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. b-- A new ultra-high-sensitivity nuclear magnetic resonance facility is coming to the Florida State University-headquartered National High Mag The National Science Foundation (NSF) has funded the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab), a new ultra-high-sensitivity nuclear magnetic resonance facility at the Florida State University (FSU). The facility will be built on a 23.5-tesla NMR magnet, described as one of the strongest in the United States, and additional equipment designed to accelerate data acquisition for a wide range of research. The NSF award announcement stated that the facility will offer “previously inaccessible capabilities for understanding the structure and dynamics of matter at the atomic scale” and is critical to U.S. priorities in biotechnology, energy, advanced manufacturing and health. The new system will use magic angle spinning combined with either DNP or cryoprobes to improve resolution, a technique that can lower measurement times by a factor of up to 16.
