Mallorca as the “Miami of Europe”? German founders discover Palma

Entrepreneurs don’t just discover Mallorca to go on vacation. Startups, investors and ex-founders who want to network… German entrepreneurs are increasingly finding opportunities to network in Mallorca, as well as on the island. Christian Reber, a serial founder of the Wunderlist app and AI company, moved from Berlin to Palma with his family last August, citing the new international school his sons attend as a great place for networking. Reber shares an office at The Circle with his wife and two employees, comparing the space to a "Facebook campus". He has now hired a father at his VC Interface Capital as a scout for AI companies. Despite living in Berlin, Reber says he does not want to live there anymore due to the high rent prices and the increasing number of new businesses in the area.

Christian Reber has noticed two things since he packed his things in Berlin and set off for Mallorca with his family last August. First: The new international school his sons go to is a great place for networking. “You meet a lot of techies who either have their own company, make money with crypto or are totally immersed in the topic of AI,” says the serial founder. He has now hired a father at his VC Interface Capital as a scout for AI companies. The second thing: If you go into a tech hub as an investor, word quickly gets around among founders. Then someone knocks on the door every day to get tips or pitch their idea. In his case, this happens at the co-working space “The Circle”, where Reber shares an office with his wife and two employees. The founder compares the place to a “Facebook campus.”

Reber is actually from Berlin. He spent 16 years advancing his career in the German capital. He first developed the to-do list app Wunderlist and then, after his million-dollar exit to Microsoft, focused on building a better presentation tool than Powerpoint with his startup pitch. He stepped down as CEO in January 2024 and recently launched the successor to his first company, “Superlist”. Also in Berlin. The founder said: “Berlin was the best time of my life for me and the foundation of my career. I am totally grateful for this and my companies will also stay in Berlin. We will also continue to invest in Berlin startups.” But he doesn’t want to live there anymore. The city has changed – especially the skyrocketing rent prices.
