A California man, Jobson Marangoni De Castro, has admitted to stealing approximately $1.8 million in jewelry and other items from two guests at a Beverly Hills hotel. The victims, who were from Brazil, were staying at a fashion event in May 2023 when De Castro stole six suitcases containing luxury items. De Castro then traveled to Miami to sell the stolen goods, claiming he had a diamond necklace and a luxury watch to sell but lacked papers for them. He has been in federal custody since his arrest in late August and is due to a sentencing hearing in the following months.

A California man has admitted to stealing approximately $1.8 million in jewelry and other items from two guests staying at a luxury hotel in Beverly Hills, then trying to sell the stolen goods in Miami, federal authorities said Tuesday.
Jobson Marangoni De Castro, 38, of Beverly Hills, pleaded guilty to one count of interstate transportation of stolen property, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California said in a news release.
The two victims traveled from Brazil to Beverly Hills in May 2023 to attend a fashion event, court documents revealed.
While federal officials have not released their identities, the Brazilian newspaper O Globo referred to them as two “female victims.”
On the evening of May 10, when the women were out for dinner, De Castro “tricked a hotel employee into giving him a key to the victims’ room,” and stole six suitcases.
The luggage contained luxury items such as jewelry, watches, designer clothing and accessories worth as much as $1.8 million, according to prosecutors.
On May 17, De Castro traveled to Miami and contacted a buyer via Instagram saying he had a diamond necklace and a luxury watch to sell but didn’t have “papers for them because he had found them in a box belonging to his late mother,” authorities said.
The items matched the description of the pieces stolen from the Beverly Hills hotel a week earlier.
After receiving a $50,000 wire transfer from the buyer on May 18, De Castro brought the items to the store, authorities said.
According to the affidavit, the name De Castro provided to the buyer, “Jobs Marangoni,” was the same name he used to book the Uber ride that took him to the Beverly Hills hotel on May 10.
De Castro has been in federal custody since he was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport in late August.
He’s expected back in court on April 30 for an evidentiary hearing to determine the loss amount. A sentencing hearing is expected to be scheduled in the following months.
