U.S. Coast Guard boats and aircraft are searching for a 20-year-old man who went overboard of the Liberty of the Seas cruise ship Thursday morning as it sailed passed the Bahamas.

The ship, operated by Royal Caribbean, was about 57 miles off Great Inagua, the southernmost island of the Bahamas, located near the eastern tip of Cuba, the Coast Guard said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter.

Royal Caribbean issued a statement that the ship’s crew “immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the Coast Guard, who has taken over the search.

”Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time,” the statement reads. “For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

According to the Coast Guard, assets involved in the search include the Cutter Seneca and an HC-144 patrol plane.
