MIAMI — The Philadelphia 76ers paid a visit to the Kaseya Center on Thursday night needing a win over the Miami Heat. The Sixers entered the night trailing the Heat by 1.5 games for the No. 6 seed in the East and had dropped two of the first three matchups with Miami on the season.

This is the first matchup between the teams where they both had their stars. Joel Embiid of the Sixers and Jimmy Butler of the Heat had both missed the first three contests between the teams on the season. Both teams exchanged body blows in this one, but Philadelphia eventually walked away with a tough 109-105 win thanks to the stellar play of Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

Embiid had 29 points and four rebounds, Maxey had 37 points, nine rebounds, and 11 assists, Kelly Oubre Jr. added 18 and eight rebounds, and Kyle Lowry had eight points, five assists, and six rebounds.

Here are the player grades following the win:

Making his return to Miami, Lowry played well. He knocked down a deep triple and played solid defense on Butler. Lowry is a tough guard and he did a good job of using his strength to force him into places he didn’t want to go. He made some big shots in the third quarter when it appeared the Heat would take control of this game. He just made some real veteran plays. The last time Maxey was in Miami back on Christmas Day, he shot just 4-for-20 from the floor in a miserable day. He had 15 points in the first quarter alone in this one. He was aggressive with his drives to the basket and finished over Miami’s defenders. He was also knocking down step-back 3s and putting Heat defenders on skates. It certainly helps to have Embiid back. His offensive game in this one was just phenomenal. The Heat are a terrific defensive team, but nothing they did mattered. Maxey just made a bunch of tough shots and guided Philadelphia in this one in a lot of facets. Oubre was on the wrong end of some tough calls from the officials, but he did some solid things on the defensive end and on the glass. He settled for some triples when he shouldn’t have, but he played well and made some contributions to the Sixers in this one. He had an impressive block on Terry Rozier at the basket as he made a nice recovery after being beat and his play in the second half was impressive for the Sixers. He was a real difference for Philadelphia down the stretch. The veteran had some tough luck misses in this one. He had wide-open looks from deep that just wouldn’t drop and also had a bunny that trickled out. He played some solid defense, though and he made plays for others to find ways to contribute. The big fella was in a groove in this one. He was knocking down mid-range jumpers off his jab step and he forced the Heat to think twice when he was protecting the rim. His mere presence on the floor allowed the Sixers to play more freely on both ends of the floor. Embiid was barking out instructions and making sure his teammates were in the right spots all night long and he made a difference for Philadelphia. He was at his best in this one and there was nothing Bam Adebayo and the Heat could do about it. The reigning league MVP looked as if he was back in a full groove. The two-man game between he and Maxey was nearly unstoppable. It was a solid overall night for Reed. He didn’t try to do too much, he played within himself, and he brought a lot of energy on both ends of the floor. his defense on Adebayo was terrific at times as he forced the Heat All-Star into some tough shots and situations. There was a stretch in the second quarter when the Heat turned to a zone defense to help them get back in the game. The Sixers actually ran some terrific zone offense and got a lot of open looks for Hield. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to convert on those looks and Miami was able to work its way back in the game and stymie the Sixers for a bit. He also had an open look in the second half that he wasn’t able to knock down. He has got to hit those open 3s for Philadelphia going forward. The night for Payne started miserably. He had two turnovers in the backcourt as Philadelphia was trying to inbound and the Heat turned those turnovers into points both times. That began Miami getting back into the game and taking a lead. In his second stint, Payne was able to contribute with an open triple from the wing. He made another 3 in the second half, but had his issues on the defensive end. The initial run for Martin was solid. He threw down a terrific alley-oop off an inbounds pass and had an impressive block on Adebayo when he rotated over. His athleticism and physicality makes a difference for this group. However, he missed some bunnies at the rim and had some issues rebounding the ball when Miami turned to Kevin Love.
