Miami-Dade tax collector cracks down on companies operating in Cuba. Is it a stunt?
A Miami-Dade ordinance specifies that local authorities can revoke licenses if a company does business with Cuba “in violation of federal law.” The Tax Collector’s Office of Miami-Dade has revoked key licenses for over two dozen companies that allegedly do business in Cuba, according to enforcement letters obtained through a public records request. The letters, which were sent in October and November, show various travel, shipping and remittance companies have been shut down. The highest concentration of affected businesses are located in Hialeah, with ten of the companies located there, another six in Miami, and four in Doral. However, despite these companies' licenses being revoked, Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez's office still stripped them of business licenses citing the state law that allows him to do so. Critics argue that the actions are politically motivated and should not be taken seriously. US-based businesses that conduct trade with Cuba under a "general" license are only required by the federal government to keep records of all transactions for ten years, and enforcement of these regulations is done through federal audits.
