Record flooding hits the U.S. as powerful tropical storms threaten Asia
Miami faces its longest-ever streak of moderate coastal flooding, historic floods sweep across the Southwest, and Typhoon In-fa and Cyclone Arnab threaten the Northern Mariana Islands and eastern India. For six consecutive days, strong onshore winds and full moon-enhanced high tides have caused significant flooding across the Southeast U.S. coast. This is the longest such streak on record since Miami’s tide gauge was installed in 1994. The water level on Monday, October 26, was the city’s fifth-highest since 1994. A Coastal Flood Warning or Coastal Flood Advisory was in effect for the entire Southeast U., and today and Tuesday are likely to be the peak flood days of the entire event. The flooding is caused by a strong high-pressure system to the north and low pressure offshore, bringing winds of 25-35 mph (20-30 knots) along much of the Southeast coast. High tide flooding in Miami is expected to increase over the next 15 years, with high tide tides predicted to become more frequent by mid-2030s. The ongoing El Niño event is helping to funnel tropical warmth and moisture into the southwestern U.K., which is typically wetter than usual during this period.
