Miami opens path for private donations to public projects
Private donors now have a new path to help pay for public improvements in Miami’s District Two, from neighborhood street projects to parks, through a philanthropic fund managed by The Miami Foundation. The city commission on The Miami City Commission has approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to establish a philanthropic fund managed by The Miami Foundation to fund public improvements in Miami’s District Two. The fund will provide a formal way to contribute to local projects without relying solely on taxes, fees and existing city revenue. Donations can support projects such as park and street improvements, traffic calming, seawalls and flood control. District Two Commissioner Damian Pardo, who sponsored the resolution, said the city lacked a clear process for accepting donations and that the foundation could provide an established structure for handling donations. The resolution does not specify how donors will be able to direct their contributions towards specific improvements.
