Cherfilus-McCormick arraignment delayed as attorney blames Florida Democratic Party for charges
The representative has been accused of stealing $5 million in FEMA funds. A federal judge has postponed the arraignment of Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) due to delays in securing lawyers for her defense against charges of stealing federal emergency funds. The decision was made by David Markus, her lead attorney, who blamed the Florida Democratic Party for the charges. The three-week delay should give Markus enough time to make arrangements to permanently represent Cherfilos-Mcormick. The charges stem from an alleged theft of $5 million in federal funds and use some of the funds for her congressional campaign. The alleged crimes were allegedly occurred before Cherfilas-McCornick was elected to Congress and before she was CEO of family-run company Trinity Health Care Services.
