Uthmeier, a GOP ‘bulldog,’ faces Rodriguez in AG race focused on Hope Florida
James Uthmeier’s many headline-grabbing actions have made this year’s election for Florida attorney general a high-profile one. James Uthmeier, Florida's attorney general, is up against former state senator Jose Javier Rodriguez in a controversial race focused on the Hope Florida scandal. The scandal, which Uthme calls a "nothing-burger" and a politically motivated hoax, has become a key issue in Rodriguez's campaign against him. Utheme was appointed to the position by Gov. Ron DeSantis and praised for his commitment to a conservative culture war agenda, including airlifting undocumented Venezuelans to Martha’s Vineyard, dismantling Disney World’s special taxing district, and transforming the New College of Florida into a conservative institution. Once he became attorney general he went after Big Tech companies, including Meta, TikTok and Open AI, sued retailers like Target and CVS, and took action against the NFL, Major League Baseball and other institutions. Democrats argue that Uthiem has used the position to push his far-right ideas and has been dangerous and unfit for the position.
