Herald endorsement: Miami Beach referendum
The Herald Editorial Board releases its Nov. 3 election endorsements. Voters in Miami Beach will be asked to approve a referendum on extending a lease for city-owned property at 1691 Michigan Ave. The lease, held by RK Rivani LLC, would allow developer Robert Rivani to build 47,000 square feet of new office space, rooftop padel courts and a members club restaurant. The extension would extend the lease to 106 years or until 2132, allowing Miami Beach to receive $432 million over two 20-year extensions and require an additional $1.5 million in public benefits from the tenant, which the city plans to use for Lincoln Road improvements. Critics argue that public-benefits dollars are not being used wisely and that this deal could benefit the surrounding area. However, the Herald Editorial Board concludes that this is a better deal than what the city already has for this public property.
