University of Miami president Julio Frenk steps down, will be UCLA’s first Latino chancellor
After nine years leading South Florida’s largest private university, Julio Frenk, a former Mexican public health official, will step down as president of the University of Miami and take on a new role as chancellor of the University of California, Los Angeles. He will start Jan. 1, 2025 and will be the first Mexican to lead the university. The University of Californian Board of Regents selected him and appointed Joe Echevarria, the current university’s CEO, as acting president. This is part of a series of changes at the university level.

Frenk will start Jan. 1, 2025 and become the first Latino to lead UCLA in its 105-year history. The University of California Board of Regents selected him Wednesday morning.
Manny Kadre, the chair of UM’s board of trustees, announced Wednesday afternoon the board appointed Joe Echevarria, the current university’s CEO, as the acting president effective immediately.
This is the latest of series of recent changes at UM’s leadership level.
